Vráž
The old woman looked at

can't go yonder past our village, the police are as thick as flies
down that way. You go afterward as far as Malčí, but when you leave
there, keep away form Čížová. The place swarm with police and
they're on the watch for deserters. You go straight through the
woods to Sedlec near Horažďovice. The policeman there's a decent
fellow, he lets ´em pass through the village. Have you got any
papers on you?" "No, Ma". "Well, don't go there, then. You'd better
go to Radomyšl, but see you get there in the evening, because all
the policemen are at the village inn by then. You'll come to a
cottage lower down the road, painted blue, and you ask there for
Melichárek. That´s my brother. Tell him I sent you and he'll show
you how to get to Budějovice from there."
How to reach Vráž from Písek
By car:
- III/1219 (14 km)
By bus:
- from the main bus station or from Pražská Street, several buses a day, weekdays only
By train:
- line no. 200, regular daily connection
By bike:
- Sedláčkova Path 1225, cross the Plynová lávka on the left bank,
at the crossroads turn left for the sanatorium; a quicker route
will take you on the 1158 road via Topělec, and in Borečnice you
can get on the 1225 and avoid cycling on the road
Things to do
- Enjoy the spa atmosphere of Vráž. The former summer residence of the Lobkowitz family has been turned into a sanatorium and it has been in operation since 1936 when it was founded by one of the most prominent Czech surgeons, Professor Vítek. If you have forgotten to book a therapeutic procedure, do not worry, there is still plenty to do. How about taking a walk through the deep woods of Vráž towards the two lakes situated ca 2 km from the village or go a little further to the Čertova Peak? You will benefit from the therapeutic effects of the local fresh air which will clear your mind and revitalize your body. www.lazne-vraz.cz
- Feed the stags in Dědovice. Only 4 km from Nová Vráž is the gamekeeper's house, Doupata, surrounded with a game preserve full of stags. If you are lucky, they might come for their treat directly to you. You will reach the game-no hyphen preserve on a narrow asphalt road from Vráž to Dědovice, follow the turning for the gamekeeper's house, both the Otavská cycling route and yellow walking route are in the same direction.
Schweik´s Recommendation
- In Dědovice you will see the water of the Orlík dam. This rocky valley is a superb fishing spot. You can buy a fishing permit at several places, ask for help at the Písek Infocentre, they will be happy to help.
- People come to the spa in Vráž for its good air. The local air
is truly restorative, so take a deep breath. If you know, or even
if you don't, the opera Rusalka by Antonín Dvořák, you might like
to visit the local Love Lakes where this opera was filmed in the
1960s. The lakes are dreamy and mysterious and should not be
missed.
