Things to do
- In Písek you have passed through the gate to South Bohemia and
in Volyně the gate to the Šumava Mountains. Originally, this was a
market settlement located on an important route to Austria and
after 1848 it became a well-known cultural centre for the whole
area in the foothills of the Šumava Mountains. Today, it is a nice
place to live and visit.
- If you visit the 13th century fortification, you will get a
chance to pop into the museum. It is open all year round and has
displays on the history of the town from ancient times till now. We
suggest that you look out for the works of the local painter, Alois
Boháč. The figures in his paintings are either reminiscent of
scenes from the Lord of the Rings or are they perhaps mythical
figures of the Šumava Mountains?
- The extensive functionalist complex from the beginning of the
1930s houses the secondary school of the wood industry. The unique
interior of the school has been retained in all its beauty and for
about a hundred years carpenters and cabinet makers have studied
there.
- Volyně is undoubtedly the best place to have a swim in the
area. The unique swimming pool from the 1940s was built following
the design of architect Václav Kolátor and its poetic spirit is
bound to impress you. The wooden changing rooms, unique shower
system, stripy umbrellas, large relaxation areas and the diving
board could keep you so busy that you might not have the time to
explore the other things that Volyně has to offer. And remember
that only those who swim have to pay.
- You should also visit the guardian angel on the Královice peak
above the town. There is a Gothic chapel from 1858 on top of the
hill and further down in the woods you will find the chapels of St
Sebastian and St Adalbert (Vojtěch). The pilgrimage place can be
seen from far away and your faith will help you overcome any snares
the Šumava hills might set for you.
Schweik´s Recommendation
- America in Volyně? You might be surprised but the local open
air cinema is just like the one you saw in Grease. Just come in
with your car, take some speakers and watch the film from the
comfort of your car.
