Radomyšl

Illustration from the book My friend Schweik_07, source: Copyright Josef Lada 2007 When Schweik reached Radomyšl towards evening, he made his way to Melichárek, and gave him the old woman's message. But Melichárek was not at all pleased. He kept asking Schweik for his papers. "It's all very well," he grumbled, "for a chap like you to run away from the army.."

Things to do

  • Instead of starting to explore Radomyšl on your own, we would really recommend that you visit the local information centre. The centre is located in the local care home and its heart and soul is Jiřina Mahníková. Ring the bell and she will be pleased to guide you. You may also pick up one or two truly unusual gifts there.
  • The finder of the Zelenohorský rukopis (The Manuscript of Zelená Hora), Josef Kovář, was born in house no. 11 on 26.4.1779. You will see a commemorative plaque above the wooden gate in the gable.
  • Try to track down the thatched cottage of Goodman Melichárek in Radomyšl where Švejk stayed the night. To find the cottage is not easy, so the less patient amongst you could instead head towards the local pond called Murder. The still waters of the pond hide a terrible story. Perhaps the large number of religious sites in the village is trying to cover up the truth that a mysterious vampire was buried in the local cemetery!
  • To reach the church behind the village, you must take the route of the picturesque Stations of the Cross with its wayside chapels decorated with motifs from the Bible. This place has a unique charm, and not only at the time of Easter celebrations.

Schweik´s Recommendation

  • Behind Radomyšl, in the woods, there is a Jewish cemetery where the parents of Franz Kafka are buried.
