Písek's
coat-of-arm is a shield with a silver square wall,
battlement and an open gate. Behind the wall there are two towers
with a window, a red roof and golden poppy heads. In between them
is the Czech two-tailed lion on a red shield. On the top is a
declining half-moon, a six-pointed star with two more of these
stars alongside the towers. The coat-of-arms can be seen on
many of the town buildings, the oldest known version is on
the stone portal of the Dean's Church. The adjacent rectory is also
decorated with artistic versions of the coat-of- arms. Not far from
there stands the former Dvořáček Hotel, and one of its eleven
graffiti created from a design by Mikoláš Aleš is the apotheosis of
the coat-of -arms. The plague column on Aleš square is decorated
with a copy of the original stone coat- of-arms. Its original can
be found at the Town Hall where it is also painted onto the plaster
in the tympanum.
