Dry-shod Journey from One Bank to the Other: Bridges in the Písek region

  • Gothic Bridge from the end of the 13th century, the oldest preserved bridge in Bohemia (pedestrians only)
  • there are 7 bridges in the town in total including two footbridges for pedestrians.

ŽĎÁKOVSKÝ BRIDGE

  • built in 1958-67, the largest single arch bridge of its time, the span of the steel arch is 330 m.

PODOLSKÝ BRIDGE

  • classed as the ´Most beautiful bridge in Europe´ at the Paris Exhibition in 1937. It was built in 1939-43, and commemorates the place where the American and the Red Armies met in 1945.

BRIDGE AT STÁDLEC

  • Empire style chain bridge from 1848. In 1960 it was transferred to the Lužnice River from Podolsko before the old Vltava valley was flooded by the Orlická Dam. The only preserved chain bridge in the Czech Republic was made operational again in 1975.

Railway Bridge by ČERVENÁ

  • built in 1886-9 using the technology of free cantilever concreting method without scaffolding (inaccessible, train connection Tábor - Ražice)

ZVÍKOVSKÉ PODHRADÍ

  • so-called bridge twins over the Otava and Vltava Rivers near their conflux, built using the free cantilever concreting method

HORNÍ NERESTCE

  • three span brick Empire bridge built in 1816-8, a modern road bridge runs parallel with it

  • Baroque bridge over the Skalice River with a chapel in the middle of the bridge from 1781
