Dub

"But don't be afraid. Now we'll go to Strakonice, Volyn, and Dub, and it'll be hellishly
bad luck if we don't scrounge some mufti there…"Illustration from the book My friend Schweik_04, source: Copyright Josef Lada 2007

Things to do

  • The small village named after a typical Czech tree (dub - oak) is situated at the edge of the Šumava Mountains and were it not for the castle here, there might not be many tourists around. The original fortification settlement, built by Michále z Dubu (1390) became, over the course of the centuries, a neo-gothic castle. The last owner before the castle was nationalised was the family of Broumovský. During the totalitarian regime the castle was turned into a student residence for the technical college in Volyně. Today the castle is restored to its former glory. The owner himself will take you round the castle to show how he managed to turn a totalitarian hostel back into a neo-gothic manor house. You will see it has not been easy. If you are in the mood to try it yourself, take your working clothes with you and give them a hand. www.dubuprachatic.cz

Schweik´s Recommendation

  • On 10:10:2010 a concert hall in the castle was officially opened. The hall has a unique plaster ceiling and it is now used for diverse social events.
  • Only 3 kilometres from Dub you will find the castle of Helfenburg. This medieval castle is not to be missed. There is a trail through the woods which will take you to the castle. www.helfenburk.estranky.cz
  • In Strunkovice nad Blanicí (5 km from Dub towards Dovrec) is a trout farm. You might like to stop there and get yourself a fresh trout, proof of how unpolluted the local countryside is.
