Čížová

Illustration from the book My friend Schweik_04, source: Copyright Josef Lada 2007 Schweik followed the route recommended by the old woman. When he got to Malčín he was joined by an itinerant concertina player….. who thought Schweik was a deserter and offered to go with him to Horaždovice where he had a married daughter whose husband was also a deserter. ….. When Schweik politely declined this offer, the concertina player flew in a temper and threatened to denounce Schweik to the police at Čížová.

Things to do

  • Čížová is a place to stop for refreshments. This neat and pretty village near Písek is well worth a visit. They make very good bread here, following an original recipe, and their other bakery products are just as nice. If you enjoy meat and need something more substantial for your journey, head for the local butcher who has built up quite a name in the area. From 10 am onwards they serve hearty soups and meat dishes. And once you've washed down all that grease it is time to be off to explore the countryside.
  • A good start would be the Čížová information centre. It is located in a newly renovated building and it is a good sign that the town council cares about the tourists coming to the area. There is a nice area for relaxing in front of the information centre. Another good place to rest is in the orchard above the village. The pear, cherry and apple trees are glorious when in full bloom, in summer they provide shade and in autumn they bear juicy fruit. The orchard is a rest area with benches and a wooden lookout post. If you get to the top of the hill, explore the historical hand winch and the former hospital. The view across the local countryside is simply stunning.
  • Learn about our birds of prey and some other examples of Czech fauna in Makov. You cannot miss the animal rescue station if you walk pass the school building towards Nová Ves. You have a unique opportunity to see a raven, a buzzard or an owl. You can feed otters who are begging for food or scratch Matilda, the pig, beneath its snout. And do not forget that the majestic oak near the picturesque village pond would be an ideal place for a picnic or roasting your smoked sausage over an open fire.

Schweik´s Recommendation

  • About 5 kilometres from Čížová is the observation tower of Velký Kamýk. All you have to do to get there is to join the 1161 trail towards Velké Nepodřice, and the tower is only a few steps away.
  • If you are in need of a beer, pop in to the pub in nearby village Bošovice. The newly opened pub is bound to please.
