Ever since the foundation of the town, Písek has been enjoying the privilege of brewing beer. The burghers of the town were allowed to brew and serve beer. To begin with, they brewed their beer at home, but eventually an association was established under the name of Právovárečné měšťanstvo (Burghers with Beer Brewing Rights). At that time a brewery had already been standing in the southern part of the castle as it was built by the owner of the town Martin de Hoeff Huerta in 1625. The beer brewing burghers put the brewery into use, extended the building and modernised its equipment. When in 1860 the last of the three towers of the former castle collapsed, the beer brewing masters took advantage of the extra space, acquired more land and built a large malt house. The foundation stone was laid on 5th of July 1862 and the construction lasted two years. Two decades later the brewery was relocated, but the malt house was still in operation, and continued when the brewery itself stopped working in 1952. Even in 1970 more than one thousand tons of malt was made here for the Protivín Brewery. Once the malt production was stopped, the building was used as a textile warehouse for some time and then was left unused until 1995 when the malt house was taken over by the town. Major reconstruction work was necessary and the first part of the reconstruction was completed in autumn 2007. The building is used for cultural and social events with three permanent exhibitions of the Centre for Children’s Illustration and one hall housing a new exhibition of the Prácheň Museum.
