Although the Jewish inhabitants formed a small percentage of the inhabitants of Písek, they had a grand synagogue built in between the Smetanova and Soukenická Streets. The synagogue was closed during the Nazi occupation not to be reopened after the war. The same destiny met the Jewish cemetery situated in the north western part of the town. The close friend of the composer Leoš Janáček, Kamila Stösslová, and the poet Richard Weiner were buried there. Weiner´s remains were exhumed in 1987 and moved to the Forest Cemetery for a ceremonial burial. The derelict Jewish cemetery was landscaped at the beginning of the 1990s.
