Písek was the first town in Bohemia with permanent public electric lighting. It was installed by the Czech electric engineer František Křižík on the 23rd of June 1887 when several arc lamps were lit up in the centre of the town. A year later the lighting was extended and instead of the locomotive as the provisional drive the old mill on the Otava River was reconstructed and turned into the power plant. This was the first power plant in Bohemia. First, a water wheel was used to generate electricity and in 1901 the wheel was replaced by two Francis turbines. These turbines were reconstructed in 1994 and the old technical equipment was put into operation. Nowadays, the power plant produces electric power which is distributed into the network. In 1997 a small museum of the electric illumination of the town was established there. The exhibition illustrates the history of electric power in Písek, and one can see the old production equipment at work.
