The Church with its three naves was built in the second half of the 13th century and originally it had two towers of the same height. One of them was raised in 1489 to reach the height of 71 metres. Just like the castle, the bridge and other oldest buildings in the town, the parish church was built by the builders from the Písek-Zvíkov building guild company. The Renaissance gables on the northern side come from the second half of the 16th century. Late Romanesque and early Gothic wall paintings can be found inside the church on the pillars. One of the side altars shows the picture of the Písek Madonna from the 14th century. The picture has played an important role in the history of the town. Unfortunately, it was stolen in 1975 and replaced by a copy. In the 1880s the Baroque furnishings were removed and replaced by Neo-Gothic ones. The chapel of St John of Nepomuk with an interesting vista of the town painted in 1742 was built onto the Church in the 18th century. A sculpture of the saint is placed in the recess on the outside of the chapel. On top of the Church at a height of 42 metres there is a gallery accessible to the public and a room for the tower-watchman with a clock mechanism. The mechanism runs a clock with four large dials which have their hands fitted the other way round for labour-saving reasons: the small hand shows minutes and the big one hours. There are four new bells fitted underneath the room: St Wenceslas, St Cyril and Methodius, the Virgin Mary and Master John Hus. They were made in 1991 - 2 by Marie Tomášková - Dytrychová from Brodek u Přerova.
