The Castle is an important example of Czech castle architecture. It was built in the second half of the 13th century by the Písek-Zvíkov building guild company for the Czech King Přemysl Otakar II who had overseen the construction. The castle was situated at the edge of the town and the design was truly grand. The not very big courtyard was surrounded by four arcade wings with three fortification towers, ceremonial premises including a chapel and two large halls situated on the first floor. The castle was bought by the town in 1509, but unfortunately it was utterly devastated over the next centuries. It is impossible to admire the original beauty of the castle as it lost all its fortification towers and three wings during the endless reconstructions and demolitions. The only wing preserved till the present is the west wing above the Otava river with its large Gothic hall decorated with frescos from 1479. Nowadays, the castle houses the Prácheň Museum which was founded in 1884. The Museum has an extensive collection on the history and countryside of the local region. The exhibitions are annually visited by thousands of people and the Museum was awarded the title of the European Museum of the Year by the European Council in 1996.
